The thyroid gland produces hormones and iodine complexes that are essential to the proper functioning of cells. If the gland produces too much hormones (hyperthyroidism), the result can be an acceleration of bodily functions. If a less than normal quantity of hormones is produced (hypothyroidism), bodily functions become slower.
Hyperthyroidism is associated with symptoms such as anxiety, sleeping disorders, weight loss (although the appetite increases), palpitations, development of goiter, and ocular protrusion (exophthalmia).
